The Blues sacked Liam Rosenior on Wednesday following a run of five consecutive defeats in the league without scoring.

Rosenior lasted less than four months in the job, and is the second head coach to leave Stamford Bridge this season following the departure of Enzo Maresca.

Paul Merson claims Chelsea would love to appoint Eddie Howe

Calum McFarlane has been placed in interim charge for the remainder of the season, whilst Chelsea’s sporting directors search for another head coach.

It’s been reported there are seven or eight names under consideration, with Andoni Iraola thought to be an early front runner.

David Ornstein expects an appointment to be made early in the summer, and Merson believes Chelsea would love to appoint Howe.

“I’m a big fan of Eddie Howe. If Eddie Howe leaves Newcastle, they’ll be queueing up around the corner for him,” he told Sky Sports.

“So that tells you everything, be careful Newcastle.”

“Chelsea would take him tomorrow morning, you’d like to think so wouldn’t you?

“In my opinion, they’d take him all day long. We’re talking about a next England manager, 100%.
