The Wings failed to qualify for the playoffs for a 10th consecutive season, the longest such streak currently in the NHL. Yzerman was hired seven years ago and has been unable to steer the Wings into the postseason tournament.

The Wings were officially eliminated on April 11, in a loss at LCA to New Jersey, which led the sellout crowd to boo the Wings off the ice at game's conclusion in the final home game of the season.

After the Wings' ended the season with an embarrassing 8-1 loss in Florida, McLellan met with reporters for approximately 45 seconds before cutting short the interview, disgusted by the way his team played.

Wings players met with the media Friday and expressed disappointment with how the season unfolded. The Wings were among the Eastern Conference leaders in late January.

"Difficult end of the season," captain Dylan Larkin said. "It's never a fun time when you miss the playoffs. But especially in this fashion, kind of being here again. It's not a pleasant day around the rink, that's for sure.

"We need to get the Detroit Red Wings back in the playoffs."
