The Baltimore Orioles got some much-needed good news on Friday when Matt Holliday went on Foul Territory and provided a positive update on his son Jackson Holliday's wrist.

The former All-Star said the soreness that forced Jackson off his rehab assignment earlier this week isn't anything serious, and that it actually came from the opposite side of his right wrist.

According to the elder Holliday, the inflammation was a result of overcompensating after his hamate bone surgery back in February, which is something that can happen as a player works to rebuild strength and adjust his swing.

That's a reassuring explanation for a fan base that has been holding its breath since Tuesday, when the Orioles pulled Jackson from Triple-A Norfolk and shut him down with mild wrist soreness.

The 22-year-old had played 11 rehab games with the Tides and was hitting .167 with two doubles and three RBIs, but his bat never really found a groove before the setback put everything on pause.

What Comes Next for Holliday

The plan going forward sounds straightforward.

Jackson will begin a new rehab assignment this weekend in Frederick, with the possibility of moving up to Norfolk by Tuesday.

From there, the Orioles will evaluate where he stands and figure out a timeline for getting him back to the big league roster.

Baltimore needs him.

The Orioles sit at 9-10 through April 17 and have dealt with injuries all season long, carrying 13 players on the injured list at the moment.

Adley Rutschman is out with ankle inflammation, and the lineup has lacked consistency without some of its key pieces healthy at the same time.

Why His Return Matters So Much

Holliday was Baltimore's primary leadoff hitter in 2025 and appeared in 149 games, posting a .242 batting average with 17 home runs and 17 stolen bases.

Those numbers don't blow the doors off, but his upside as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 draft is what makes the Orioles so patient with him.

Across 209 career games he's hitting .229 with a .659 OPS, and the organization believes this is the year he takes a real step forward.

Getting Holliday into the lineup alongside Pete Alonso and Gunnar Henderson, who leads the team with six home runs and 14 RBIs so far this season, would give Craig Albernaz the depth and balance that Baltimore has been missing since Opening Day.

The Orioles invested heavily in the offseason by adding Alonso, Shane Baz and Ryan Helsley, and all of that was built around the idea that their young core would be healthy and contributing by now.

The wrist news from Matt Holliday should give O's fans some real relief after a stressful few days.

Jackson's path back to the big leagues isn't finished yet, but it sounds like the biggest concern from this week was just a bump in the road and not something that will derail his 2026 season.
