GEORDIN HILL-LEWIS: WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DOES DA LEADER HAVE?
Over the weekend, Geordin Hill-Lewis was named the new federal leader of the DA.
At 39 years old, he is one of the youngest political party leaders in the country.
Unlike his predecessor, John Steenhuisen, who has a Senior Certificate [Matric], Geordin boasts an impressive qualification.
He obtained an honours degree in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics (PPE) from the University of Cape Town (UCT). He furthered his studies with a Master’s degree in Finance, specialising in Economic Policy, from the University of London.
Despite claiming that he “wasn’t great at maths” – and being told by a UCT lecturer that he did not have what it takes – Geordin Hill-Lewis set out to get a postgraduate degree in the subject.
He said during an interview on Jacaranda FM: “The whole purpose was to prove to myself, and that guy, that I could economic maths. And I did it”
FUTURE PRESIDENT?
During his interview, Geordin Hill-Lewis was asked if he would consider a presidential bid.
Without hesitation, he responded: “Definitely!
He responded: “I am passionate about politics. Because it gives us the best opportunity and leverage to do something positive for our country and society. To try and build a country we all know and believe is possible”.
He added: “You can do that a lot as a mayor… But your leverage, your opportunity, your impact only grows as you move into national government”.
GEORDIN HILL-LEWIS SPEARHEADS INNOVATIVE DEGREE IN MUNICIPAL POLICING
Last week, Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, who is also the new leader of the DA, announced plans to develop a bachelor’s degree in municipal policing.
Partnering with STADIO Higher Education, the City of Cape Town plans to launch the new course through its Public Safety Training College.
The degree – which is open to Metro police officers and volunteers – is accredited by the Safety and Security Sector Education and Training Authority (SASSETA) and the South African Police Service (SAPS).
He said at the signing ceremony last week: “We can make our cities much safer with well-trained metro police working in strong partnerships with the SAPS.”
