School calendar
The academic year is structured as follows:
- Term 1: 14 January – 27 March (53 days) – Complete
- Term 2: 8 April – 26 June (54 days)
- Term 3: 21 July – 23 September (46 days)
- Term 4: 6 October – 9 December (47 days)
In total, the calendar includes 200 school days.
Term 2 will include a number of public holidays as well as a ‘special adjustment’ around Youth Day.
- Monday, 15 June has been declared an additional school holiday
- This creates a long weekend ahead of Youth Day on Tuesday, 16 June
The adjustment was agreed upon during consultations involving education authorities and key stakeholders.
In addition, Monday, 27 April is Freedom Day and Friday, 1 May is Workers’ Day – resulting in back-to-back three-day weekends.
The Department of Basic Education reviews the school calendar annually to ensure a balance between teaching time and rest periods, while maintaining alignment across provinces.
