White’s inclusion for upcoming warm-ups against Uruguay and Japan marks his first call-up in three years.
The 28-year-old famously left the 2022 World Cup camp in Qatar early for personal reasons. He remained unavailable throughout the remainder of Gareth Southgate’s tenure.
However, Tuchel confirmed the slate has been wiped clean ahead of Friday’s clash at Wembley.
The German tactician admitted he was less concerned with past friction than the player’s current desire.
“I don’t know exactly what happened,” Tuchel told reporters on Thursday. “I was also not 100% interested because I wanted to open a new page and a new book.”
The manager revealed that White showed immediate enthusiasm when asked if he was ready to return.
According to the manager, the defender “straightaway, without hesitation, said he would love to come back and was desperate to come back.”
This recall provides a major boost to England’s defensive options before the World Cup. White’s versatility at right-back and centre-back offers Tuchel vital tactical flexibility. The defender now looks to cement his place in the final squad for North America.
“Everyone Deserves a Second Chance”: Tuchel welcomes Ben White back
Tuchel is eager to integrate Ben White’s technical quality into his backline. However, he acknowledged that the defender must “smooth things over” within the dressing room.
Several current squad members were present during the 2022 World Cup fallout.
Consequently, Tuchel stressed the importance of internal reconciliation before the tournament begins.
“I think it’s necessary he clears the air with his teammates,” the manager noted. “Let’s see how he feels, if he feels as comfortable and as confident as he thought he would.”
White’s return coincides with a significant defensive injury crisis at Arsenal. Key teammates William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães have both withdrawn from international duty this week.
Consequently, this international window serves as a vital platform for White to showcase his elite quality.
He must reintegrate into the England dressing room while resolving his long-term future at the Emirates.
White remains hopeful that this international break provides the spark needed to finish the season strongly.
The manager is currently finalising his plans for the 2026 World Cup in North America. England host Uruguay at Wembley tonight before facing Japan four days later.
These fixtures represent the final home exhibition matches before the tournament begins on 11 June. They offer White a definitive opportunity to cement his place in the summer squad.
