Morgue worker fired for leaking Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau death details

· Toronto Sun

A longtime employee working at the Gloucester County morgue has been fired after they leaked information regarding the deaths of NHL star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew Gaudreau in 2024.

Connor McGlynn, who was an employee at the morgue for 14 years, was fired in September 2024, but he challenged his termination.

McGlynn was accused of sending photos of his notes surrounding the deaths of the Gaudreau brothers to members of his hockey team.

According to NJ.com and The Courier-Post , hours after the deadly crash that took the lives of the siblings, a photo of McGlynn’s handwritten notes identifying the brothers, along with details surrounding the accident, appeared on social media.

“McGlynn had no explanation for why he would send the picture in the text, other than that he was in disbelief and acted out of emotion,” Judge Allison Friedman’s ruling said.

Friedman said that McGlynn, “despite having signed a non-disclosure agreement, provided confidential information to his friend group.”

The info that was shared by an unnamed third party provided “identifying details” for the Gaudreaus and the personal cellphone number of one of the investigating officers.

Johnny, 31, and Matthew, 29, were riding their bikes when they were hit by a car and killed on Aug. 29, 2024, the day before the pair were set to be groomsmen at their sister’s wedding in New Jersey.

The ruling echoes a similar case that saw sheriff officers and firefighters sharing gruesome photos of the helicopter crash that killed Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter in 2020.

Bryant’s widow sued Los Angeles County , alleging invasion of privacy, and was awarded nearly $29 million in 2023.

Accused looking to have case tossed

Suspected driver Sean Higgins is accused of driving drunk and hitting the Gaudreau brothers, who were pronounced dead at the scene.

Higgins is facing a series of charges, including two counts of reckless vehicular homicide, aggravated manslaughter, evidence tampering and leaving the scene of a fatal accident.

According to the criminal complaint obtained by The Associated Press and TMZ Sports , Higgins told  authorities he drank “5-6 beers” prior to the crash and admitted to consuming alcohol while driving.

Last month, his defence team tried to argue that the case against him should be tossed after introducing new blood evidence they claim shows he was not legally drunk at the time of the crash.

“The grand jury heard the (blood alcohol) reading was 0.087, when the actual reading is 0.075. We don’t know how much that impacted the jury when it came to other aspects of the case,” Higgins’ lawyer Richard Klineburger said, according to the New York Times .

Higgins’ lawyers have also suggested that the Gaudreaus were drunk at the time of the fatal crash.

He faces up to 70 years in prison if convicted on all counts and previously rejected a 35-year-sentence plea deal .

Meredith Gaudreau shares how she copes with grief

In an interview with Kylie Kelce on her Not Gonna Lie podcast earlier this month, Johnny’s widow, Meredith, shared how she is handling her grief more than a year after her husband’s death.

Meredith said that she took comfort in a piece of advice she was given to “write things down: memories, stories.”

“Grief just has this way of taking over your body, your memory,” she told Kelce, according to the Today show . “I have so much brain fog from grief, but I find things I’ve written down, I can go back and read. It just all comes back and or some of it’s like, ‘I don’t remember that, but thank god I wrote that down.'”

Meredith also saved screenshots of conversations she had with Johnny when she told him they were expecting their third child — Carter, who was born in April 2025 after his dad’s death.

And the messages aren’t just for Meredith’s children. They are for her as well.

“Going back and having that to read is what you want to do at the end of your day. And it’s heartwarming,” she explained. “At the end of the day when the kids are asleep and it’s just time for yourself, you just think about that person.”
