When you think of teams that could draft a quarterback in 2026, the Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions don't come to mind.
That's because both teams have entrenched starters in Dak Prescott and Jared Goff, and the Cowboys have solid backup options in Joe Milton and Sam Howell, while Detroit sports Teddy Bridgewater.
One team we could see take a quarterback is the Cleveland Browns, who don't have a surefire long-term solution on the roster, although the indication is Shedeur Sanders will get an opportunity to prove himself in 2026.
We mention those three teams because USA TODAY's Ayrton Ostly believes they are among the best landing spots for Miami quarterback Carson Beck.
"Monken served as the Georgia offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2020 to 2022, working with Bennett and Beck. The latter has developed as a passer since being the Bulldogs’ backup behind Bennett, but Monken is still familiar with him," Ostly said of Beck and the Browns.
"Beck compares well to a Goff-type quarterback. He’s got prototypical size at 6-foot-5 and 233 pounds, making him durable enough to handle NFL defenders in his face," Ostly said of Beck to the Lions. "But he’ll need a strong offensive line around him to stave off interior pressure, one of the weaker points of his game. Detroit’s talents at running back (Jahmyr Gibbs), wide receiver (Amon-Ra St. Brown) and tight end (Sam LaPorta) are good enough for him to operate in the point guard role he did in college and distribute the ball in the case of a Goff injury."
"Starting quarterback Dak Prescott has dealt with injuries in recent years. He’s missed time in four of the last six seasons, including extended time in 2020 and 2024," Ostly said of the Cowboys. "Beck’s experienced and knows how to point-and-shoot for an offense with plenty of firepower. The Georgia offense in 2023 had future NFL players Brock Bowers and Ladd McConkey in the pass-catching corps. As he would in Detroit, he’d be a rookie backup with extensive college experience who could handle getting the ball out quickly to talented receivers."
Carson Beck scouting report
After transferring to Miami in 2025, Beck recovered a bit of his stock after tossing 30 touchdowns and 12 picks while completing 72.4% of his passes for 3,813 yards.
Beck has the prototypical size (6-foot-4 and 215 pounds) and is accurate, but he doesn't offer much in the way of athleticism and arm strength.
Beck was once viewed as an elite quarterback prospect, but things have changed in recent years and he's now viewed as more of a mid-round pick.
Here's more on Beck, per NFL Draft Buzz, which has the Miami product as a projected fourth-round pick:
Here's what you need to understand about Carson Beck - the physical tools have never been the question. Stand him next to any quarterback in this class and he looks the part at 6'4", 220 pounds with legitimate NFL arm strength. Put on the tape and watch him sling it into tight windows, manipulate coverage with his eyes, work through progressions with veteran poise. The kid can play. Always could. But quarterback evaluation isn't just about what shows up on Sunday highlights. It's about what happens when the game gets messy, when protection breaks down, when you need someone to protect a lead instead of chasing one. That's where Beck has lived in the gray area throughout his career, making scouts nervous about whether they can build around him long-term.
While we could potentially see the Cowboys or Lions taking a late-round swing on Beck, it's much more likely the Browns give him a look in the middle rounds instead.
Throwing Beck into a competition between Sanders, Deshaun Watson and Dillon Gabriel wouldn't be the worst idea as the team tries to navigate one more season before a 2027 draft class that should be much better at quarterback.
