BATON ROUGE, La. — Kim Mulkey sported a sparkly purple jacket emblazoned with a tiger head as her LSU squad blitzed Jacksonville in the first round of the women's NCAA Tournament on Friday.

The outfit was another in a long line of attention-grabbing for the veteran coach.

When Mulkey walks the sideline of Sunday's matchup against Texas Tech, she'll have some competition for best-dressed.

Although generally not as loud as Mulkey's garb, Lady Raiders coach Krista Gerlich has the fashion approval of her players.

"I think that every room that she enters is automatically just lightened up," Tech forward Julie Nekolná said. "I really like her style."

Gerlich wore a silver pant suit with a navy blue top — matching her team's opponent — when Tech downed Villanova in the opening round at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. Accompanied by black Christian Louboutin red-bottom heels, it made junior Jalynn Bristow's favorite outfit of the season.

Bristow said she admires how Gerlich's style reflects their home state.

"Personally, I love it," Bristow said. "Being from Texas, sparkles, sequins, the whole shebang is always a big deal, especially for a special occasion."

Gerlich doesn't need a big game to show out, though.

"I feel like every game — non-conference, a scrimmage, whatever it could be — she always shows up," Bristow said. "They always say, look good, feel good, do good, and I think Coach always shows that she's ready."

Shoes are often the crowning jewel of Gerlich's look. Nekolná said a silver, sparkly pair of heels top her list of the coach's best. Gerlich received them as a gift after Tech's first win over Baylor this season, Nekolná said.

"I think they're the best piece of any outfit that she wears," Nekolná said.

As for what Gerlich will appear in for the second round — Tech's first since 2005 — not even players know. It's always a mystery, but players usually approve.

"We're always surprised," Bristow said. "We have an idea (when) Christmas time comes around. She may have a necklace or a bracelet or earrings on. Other than that, it's just a surprise. We always tell her what we think about it, or whatever the opinion is on it. It's 99% of the time very good."
