Yankees make controversial decision on Carlos Lagrange just before Opening Day

Carlos Lagrange won’t have to wait long before he is wearing the New York Yankees’ pinstripes again.

Unfortunately for fans of the hard-throwing pitching prospect, that doesn’t mean he will be in uniform on Opening Day in San Francisco on March 25.

Lagrange was reassigned to the team’s minor league camp on March 19, despite drawing rave reviews from fans and teammates alike for his eye-popping performance in the team’s major league spring training camp.
Lagrange, 22, went 1-0 with a 0.66 ERA (13.2 innings, one earned run) in his first exposure to major league hitting in the Grapefruit League.
A consensus Top 100 prospect in baseball, Lagrange lit up radar guns and stifled opponents, allowing only six hits and four walks across four spring games.
The Yankees also optioned pitcher Angel Chivilli to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
“I’ve never seen velocity like that, consistently and doing it over a bunch of innings,” Yankees pitcher Max Fried told Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. “He works really hard. He’s really open to a lot of information, and obviously his results speak for themselves. He’s been really good. He’ll definitely impact this team.”
“I don’t have any doubts he could help us right now,” Yankees catcher Austin Wells said, via Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News.
Lagrange went 7-6 with a 3.22 ERA in 16 games (15 starts) for Double-A Somerset last year. He is likely to begin the 2026 season at Triple-A.
