Male youth killed after being struck by GO train in Mississauga

A male youth is dead after he was struck by a GO train Wednesday in Mississauga.
Peel Regional Police said at about 3:30 p.m. that they had a large presence near Alexandra Ave. and Fourth St. , between the Port Credit and Long Branch GO stations, after receiving reports that a person had been struck by a train.

Const. Ty Bell-Morena told reporters at the scene that a boy, who they believed to be about 12 to 13 years old, was found by first responders after being struck by a westbound train and pronounced dead.
Bell-Morena said the boy and another child were riding a motorized bike in the area before the collision, CP24 reported, and that the situation was “absolutely horrible” for the boy’s family.
“I’ll just say all indications at this point are that the traffic signals … were functioning and in working order with the arms down, lights flashing and an audible tone as well,” he said, via CP24.

‘Mind the crossings,’ police warn
Bell-Morena told reporters, according to CP24, that it appeared as if the boy had gone around the barrier, adding “this is a time, unfortunately, to remind our kids that when they’re on these bikes to really mind the crossings, particularly at a railway passing.
“I certainly don’t want to pass on any blame towards the young man here,” he said, via CP24. “When I was his age, I was out on a dirt bike myself and you should be able to go out and have fun (in a safe manner).”
The collision had shut down service to GO’s Lakeshore West route for several hours in the afternoon and the line continued to face “significant delays” well into the evening .
