· The South African

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has called for US President Donald Trump to be “declared a war criminal”.

This follows the resignation of Joseph Kent as director of the US National Counterterrorism Centre.

In a letter shared on X, Kent claimed that Iran posed no imminent threat to the United States. He also alleged that the US entered the war in Iran due to pressure from Israel and its “powerful American lobby”.

EFF REACTS TO WAR IN IRAN

The EFF described Kent’s resignation letter as a “damning confirmation”, claiming that the war against Iran is “illegal, unjustified, and built on deliberate misinformation”.

In a statement, the Red Berets said Kent’s claims reveal fractures within US security and intelligence structures. The party also said the letter supports claims that US bombings have resulted in civilian deaths, including the bombing of a school in which 168 children were killed.

Kent called on Trump to end the war. Echoing this, the party demanded an immediate halt to US- and Israel-led military action.

“The EFF therefore reiterates, without hesitation, that this is Trump’s war. It is a war of aggression and domination, and it bears all the hallmarks of genocide. As such, we call for Donald Trump to be declared a war criminal and to be held accountable before international legal institutions,” the party said.

The EFF added that South Africa should not engage diplomatically with the US while pursuing its case against Israel at the International Court of Justice.

TRUMP REACTS TO NATO COUNTRIES

Meanwhile, Trump said on his Truth Social platform that most members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) have opted not to take part in the war against Iran, despite agreeing that Iran should not possess nuclear weapons.

He claimed that Iran’s military has been “decimated”, saying the Iranian navy, air force, air defence systems, radar capabilities, and leadership have been destroyed.

“Because of the fact that we have had such military success, we no longer ‘need,’ or desire, the NATO countries’ assistance. We never did. Likewise, Japan, Australia, or South Korea. In fact, speaking as President of the United States of America, by far the most powerful country anywhere in the world, we do not need the help of anyone!” Trump said.
