Spring Training typically gives teams their first look at how young players are progressing in their organization. For the New York Mets, Carson Benge is someone the organization clearly wanted to see.
Team president David Stearns recently spoke about Benge’s performance as the Mets continue thinking of their roster.
“I think Carson is having a nice camp, similar to all of our guys,” Stearns said, per SNY’s Danny Abriano. “He's worked really hard. I think we've had a really work-intensive camp, across the field, and Carson has participated in that.
“In the games, we've seen what we would've expected,” Stearns continued. “He's taken very competitive at-bats. He's a tough out. I think he's played a nice right field.”
Benge is a good player from top to bottom. At the big league level, he’ll have to swing it. While he’s still developing, the Mets seem pleased with how he’s handled the opportunity to play against the big boys.
“So, he's done what we would expect him to do,” Stearns added. “We think he's gonna be a really good player, and we'll have a difficult decision as we get toward the end of camp.”
We’ll eventually see during the season what the Mets want to do.
