Heartbreaking: CBI won’t be held this year

The College Basketball Invitational will not be held this year, the organizers of the postseason tournament announced on Thursday morning with a social graphic post on Twitter/X.

The post simply reads: “Due to circumstances beyond our control, the CBI will not be held this year. We will see you next year!”

As of publishing, there has been no clear indicator of the cancellation. The last time the CBI wasn’t held was due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The event had been held each year since 2008, sans 2020, until this year that is. Illinois State is the reigning CBI champ.

Of all years to have it cancelled, when a number of top seeds in mid-major leagues fell (Belmont, Stephen F. Austin, among others), this one feels especially painful for fans who simply want to watch their teams play more hoops.

Mid-majors have won every CBI title except two – Oregon State in 2009 and Washington State in 2012. Ironically, both have fallen to the mid-major ranks since by virtue of joining the WCC.
