Texas A&M is a finalist to land 2027 4-star safety out of California

· Yahoo Sports

Texas A&M coach Mike Elko isn't afraid to go into California and compete for some of the top prospects, especially on defense, already proving his recruiting prowess after landing three California-based signees in the 2025 signing class, led by rising edge rusher Marco Jones, who is expected to earn a starting spot next season.

In the 2027 cycle, Elko has already landed a commitment from rising three-star defensive lineman Myels Smith out of Inglewood, California, and has made significant headway with four-star safety Gavin Williams, who is set to enter his senior season at Damien HS in La Verne, California. This week, Williams released his top top 5 program list, which includes Washington, UCLA, USC, Notre Dame, and Texas A&M.

Williams will take an official visit to College Station on June 5, joining a long list of blue-chip 2027 prospects who will visit that weekend. Extremely versatile, Williams is also a standout wide receiver, recording 401 yards and four touchdowns last season, and produced a career high 63 tackles, combined with two interceptions, eight pass deflections, and five tackles for loss during his 2025-2026 junior season.

Standing at 6'1" and 180 pounds, Williams looks like a perfect fit in Mike Elko's future secondary, possessing the size, speed, and instincts of a wide receiver to become a ball hawk at the next level, while his efficiency as an open field tackler makes him a strong safety/linebacker hybrid.

According to Rivals, Gavin Williams is the 13th-ranked safety and the 13th-ranked prospect in California.
