The hosts had taken the lead through Nadiem Amiri in the 42nd minute, but Vieira converted a free-kick in the 64th to win his side a point.
Vieira even had a chance to win the match a few minutes later, but his shot from outside the penalty area ultimately ended up being a comfortable save for the Mainz goalkeeper.

Importantly for HSV, Vieira’s equaliser extended their recent unbeaten streak to six games in the Bundesliga, during which time they’ve built up a nine-point lead over the relegation zone. There are also eight teams between themselves and the drop, so they’re in a great position to stay up.
Vieira has now racked up eight goals and assists in 19 matches for the German side, a solid return considering his disrupted start with the club.
A couple of unfortunate red cards in Vieira’s first five Bundesliga appearances meant he’d served two suspensions by the time the November international break came around, but he’s been a consistent starter for the team since then.

Recent reports have suggested HSV want to renegotiate the price of a potential permanent transfer for Vieira this summer, as they’re unwilling to activate the €20m clause in his loan deal from Arsenal.
But given Vieira’s positive performances in 2026 so far, it certainly seems likely HSV would want to sign him permanently for the right price.
