Quadruple overtime? West Lafayette JV boys basketball steals show

WEST LAFAYETTE - Three basketball games drew fanfare on Thursday, Feb. 19, within the neighborly confines that accompany Mackey Arena and Berberian Gymnasium, adjacent to each other at the corner of Northwestern Avenue and Meridian Street.

The West Lafayette boys basketball team battled Logansport for the Hoosier Conference Championship, while Purdue women's basketball nearly erased an 26-point deficit to No. 13 Iowa.

But it was the West Lafayette junior varsity squad that captured the imagination of fans in quadruple overtime.

Yes, quadruple overtime.

"I've been coaching and playing sports between football and basketball at 14 years," coach Tyler Marsh said. "I've never seen anything like it."

West Lafayette went into overtime against Logansport. And the game kept going. And going.

The game was well into its second overtime and the West Lafayette student section in full attendance for its RAP TV theme night.

Groans and cheers got louder as the lead teetered back and forth between ties for both sides.

West Lafayette overcame a pair of two-possession deficits in the first and second overtimes before rallying.

Forward Tanner McPherson scored 22 points, guard Andrew Pfeiffer scored 20 points, Braylon Crisp added 18 points and Max Smosna delivered 16 points.

But the heroism was saved for sophomore Chase Ostrom, who scored a layup at the buzzer and the student section stormed the court.

Ostrom finished with eight points after having just one bucket in the first half.

A memory for Marsh and his players who overcame an 19-point deficit at home to beat Central Catholic last Friday.

Leave it to West Lafayette and Logansport JV, and the fans who were astonished to witness what became a pandemonium and an evening of glory for the players who least expected it.

"It just shows their character," Marsh said. "Those kids have worked hard in practice and we've been in some tight situations. But for it to all play out like that, I couldn't be more proud."
