Robert Woods retires: an underrated fantasy football legacy

· Yahoo Sports

A torn ACL at age 29 altered the trajectory of one of the most underrated wide receivers of the past decade, and certainly one of the most underrated fantasy WRs. Now that Robert Woods has retired, let's recognize just how good he was.

There were three distinct phases to Woods' fantasy football career. His first four seasons were in Buffalo, where he caught passes thrown by QBs like EJ Manuel, Thaddeus Lewis, Kyle Orton, and Tyrod Taylor. Naturally, there was little room for glory. Woods' best fantasy numbers came in 2014.

A switch to the Rams beginning in 2017 helped make him a fantasy mainstay. In his first year there, he was joined by rookie WR Cooper Kupp, second-year QB Jared Goff, and third-year RB Todd Gurley. It was the foundation of an offensive juggernaut, and as managers know all too well, it's often wise to invest in starters on high-scoring teams. The Rams led the league in scoring that season.

Despite frequently sharing the field with one of the game's best running backs and a rapidly rising wide receiver, Woods carved out a unique fantasy niche. In Year 1, he was the WR19 in points per game -- the first of five consecutive seasons finishing in the top 20. Few WRs this century can make the same claim.

However, in that fifth season in L.A., Woods tore his ACL at age 29. He was never the same after that, finishing outside the top 70 in each of his remaining seasons with Tennessee and Houston.

It's been more than five years since Woods was fantasy-relevant. But it doesn't take away from what he achieved: one of the most consistent statistical outputs by a WR in the modern NFL.
